Let me tell you about a game…

In September 2014, Square Enix worked with the Japanese company DeNA to release a F2P mobile game called Final Fantasy Record Keeper.  The framing device for this game involves a kingdom whose greatest treasures were stories passed down from generations past.  As the player, you work your way through these stories so their contents are not forgotten.  As you progress through the story beats and memorable battles from the Final Fantasy games, you recruit the playable characters from those stories to add to your party.  In March, FFRK was released in North America and I’ve been playing it casually ever since.

This is obviously not the first mobile game Square Enix has made to wring the nostalgia dollars out of your wallets, but it’s definitely one of the better ones.  Final Fantasy All the Bravest, released in 2013 is notoriously bad for its F2p trappings and barely-there gameplay.  Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (and its sequel Curtain Call) are fantastic music games, but don’t scratch that same itch of classic Final Fantasy gameplay.  Which brings me to my point–now that I have played so much FFRK I realized that I am jonesing for some good ol’ fashioned JRPG action.

When I was younger, the Final Fantasy games were some of my most memorable gaming experiences.  I remember going over guides, making sure I would find every secret in Final Fantasy 6 (getting the Economizer, finding the Chainsaw…).  I remember seeing a preview in PlayStation Magazine for Final Fantasy 8 and being blown away at how amazing the graphics looked.  At one point or another I played through all of the games, but now it’s been several years since I touched one.

I figure this is pretty much the perfect storm to get me to play through the series again.  Start to finish, all mainline entries of the series (including FFX-2 and FFXIII 2&3).  But to make it a bit more interesting, I thought I would share this experience with the rest of you.  Whether you have played through the games yourself and are looking for a nostalgia fix, or you’ve never touched FF6 and wonder what all the hype is about, I hope to have something here for everyone.
